Well from me and I think I can include Scotty in this who have worked on corn fields... Don't prune corn!! Also now I have a extra"reference" to back that up.. So no pruning! If you want more corn.

Probably depends on variety a little. If you are growing a Bummings hybrid special, it may not grow ears from the shoots. But in my own personal experience I haven't seen anything great come from the side shoots.

This is a pic from my old place, that little fella down the bottom didn't eventuate to anything..

The shoots I'm talking about are much lower and come off the base.

Yep... the suckers that come out from the base at about a 30 degree angle.

Commercial growers growing for grain normally have a lot of acreage planted so they don't remove the suckers as is would be too labour intensive and time consuming, whereas most of those growing for fresh produce snap them off as close to the main trunk as possible... I've always done it too. See in the pic below they've been removed.

As someone mentioned earlier probably a variety thing as well. One of the varieties I've got planted doesn't have any while the other has lots.
