the growing season will be over in about a month or so and I will be preparing to move the fish indoors.

What plants can I grow under florecent lights?

Dave Donley is growing a lot in his basement under lights. lettuce and basil come to mind. Dave can fill you in on what else, and what type lights he is using.

that would be a good start. For the winter it is more a matter of cleaning the water than growing food. I hope to have my fish as well as any that I can take care of for others for the winter.

various herbs still do well in winter. rosemary and lavander come to mind

Anyone have any experience with sodium or halide lights? From what I have heard, they can be more efficient than florecents(more lumens per watt).

They have much higher lumens, and MAYBE more lumens per watt, but they are HIGH wattage and you are talking a HUGE number of lumens before it would be more economical to go halide or sodium. I have some 'Fourex' lights I'll be using to extend my daylight hours on the short winter days. Mostly I'll use them for breeding purposes, not so much growing.

I'm a MH person myself. i know you can get them down to about 175W so at that wattage it would only be the eq. of about 4 twin FL fixtures and will produce much more light of a better spectrum IMHO.
