Hi All,

Earlier today I found a couple of dead fingerlings so I removed them and tested water. All seemed OK. Tonight on my return I have about 20 fingerlings dead and also 5 adult Trout (1KG+). These are in seperate tank but part of same system. Remaining large trout in main FT are sluggish but smaller ones seem OK.

I harvested a couple of big ones today 1.4KG and found pine needles in there stomachs, I thought that this was my problem and planned to harvest the rest tomorrow.

Any other idea's :think:

Thats really weird. :dontknow: You have a pine tree near by then?

Are there any pine needles in the fish tank at the moment?

Huh, that sounds feasible to me! I can see it now, the pine needles land on the surface of the fish tank, trout don't look to investigate, they just swallow! Too late!

Yes there are a few pine needles in the water at the moment. I scooped as many out as I could earlier today. I tested the water and ammonia and nitrites were 0, ph normal. Nitrates a little high but should be OK.
Think I will retest again in the morning!

Another common factor is all large trout that have died are full if eggs! Could this also be a factor ?

All large trout go very quiet and then look like this :think: I have nearly lost the whole lot about 40 fingerlings and 8 large fish.

Troutman did say something about trout not getting beyond a certain age because they can't deposit their eggs.. Still that wouldn't explain all the fingerlings.

I still think perhaps an external contaminant, pine needles or something.... And of course you can't really test for those things...

I thought DO as well for a while but as I haven't had a problem with DO before and thought that it would of been an issue in higher temps I ruled it out.
I am running a 70lpm air pump through air stones and curtains into both FT's and the sump as well to ensure good DO of incoming water.

I am looking at external contanimants but nothing is obvious (apart from pine tree, which hasn't been an issue for the last 12+mths). There is 1 of last seasons fish in the main FT and shoing no signs of illness. :dontknow:

Was salted to 3ppm when fingerlings were added about 6 weeks ago.
