I have woolworths and coles open near me. What kind of salt do i look for?

Would pool salt be ok?

Also with salting the FT would that have any effects on the yabbies?

I use pool salt and have salted to 2ppt and it hasnt hurt the yabbies or strawberries. But it wouldnt have been at 2 for long with all the water top ups needed at this time of year.
I doubt if the stupidmarkets would have the right kind of salt, that is with nothing else added

Yabbies can handle a lot of salt so wouldnt worry from that point of view as long as you dont go overboard - just make sure the pool salt has no anti-caking agents... Ill let the more experienced members confirm all that though :)

We are lucky that most of the pool shops around here use pure Hattah Lakes salt so I havent had to look into different types and whats best.

I know Rupe and others have preferred brands that have been mentioned on other threads in great detail...might be worth a search.

I went down to coles, unfortunately they dont have pool salt either and most pool shops are closed.

I bought some cooking salt (pure sea salt apparently) will this work?

Doh its got anti caking, have to find something else.

Will flashing kill fish very quickly? I actually just got the fish from rupert a few hours ago. I cant get the salt till tomorrow morning it looks like.

Lets hope for the best. Stupid silvers are trying to get themselves killed by swimming around the yabbies. Will get some pool salt tomorrow morning before work. Have 4 air lines in there on max. We will see if there is any floaters.

Depends why the fish are flashing I suppose. I had one silver flashing from the time I got them many months ago. They originally went into the aquariums inside and I saw this one fish flash once or twice a night. Then out into the AP and he was still flashing so salted to 1ppt and he stopped.
Got small silvers from glenwaters a few weeks ago and one or two of them were flashing as well, salted to 2ppt and the flashing stopped.
They will be fine till you can get some pure salt to do the job with, in the words of HHGTTG, DONT PANIC

Do you have a sump tank Z-man? When you put in the salt, I wouldnt dump it straight into your FT with the yabbies in the bottom without dissolving it first before checking with someone that its OK to do so... pure salt sitting on the bottom with the yabbies might kill them. .. Which is why most people would add things to the sump to give them time to dissolve - not straight to the FT.

Bunnings or IGA.... Sunray Pool Salt.... Bunnings had it on special the other week for about $7 per 20kg bag...

Salt to a minumum 2ppt... thats 2kg/1000L

Always a good idea to salt to at least 1-2ppt whenever you put fish in IMO....

Thanks everyone for replying.

I need to get a camera, my brother took his back.

The silvers look ok, swimming around and wasnt flashing this morning. They were hiding in the back corner of the tank so i cannot really see what they are doing. To be safe i still salted to 2pp. I thought the silvers would be smart and stay away from the reach of the yabblies.....apparently not :upset: They are hiding on the bottom.

I think i have to move the yabbies so they dont get the silvers :mrgreen:
