i dont understand abt salting. since im a newbie and 16yrs old,im still learning..u know..
the pellets are feeding in the pond..

all the pellets are sucked up and filtered at the grow bed and it is caused by my fishes that i think have lost their appetite. what is the problem actually? are my fishes need more oxygen? |

What sort of fish Omek? ... welcome by the way... Have you only recently introduced them to a new tank... or a new type of feed... or new size?? How long have they been off the feed?.... Your tank water parameters would be helpful as well... i.e.. water temp, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate... salt level, if applicable... And any other observations... like a major change in the weather... sudden cold/hot spell... approaching monsoon....? |

well.. i just move the fishes from a large pond.. the water flow is continuous 5 tilapia(getting to be adult i guess) constant condition,climate,temp the gravels i use is getting compact with the 'decorating' fish pellets...... percentages of the water is pumped out and replaced (once in 2 month) 0.5m water level, 1m width, 1.9m length of tank. 10cm depth of grow bed. |

the fishes started to behave in such way a day after i complete my system havent done any test |

If you've just moved them from a large pond into a smaller tank... they'll take time to get used to the smaller confines... and probably wont eat for at least a few days... Were you pellet feeding them in the pond, or were they eating natural feeds??? They could be stressed from the move... I'd advise salting the tank to 1ppt... Stop feeding immediately.... remove all uneaten feed... and aerate the tank... I'm concerned that your growbed may not be deep enough to provide sufficient bio-filtration... and provide enough oxygenation of the water returning to the tank... Don't understand your water turnover... Quote: percentages of the water is pumped out and replaced (once in 2 month)

And the depth of your tank... and generally smaller volume than the pond... probably means your water temperature could be significantly warmer than the pond was... again possibly stressing the fish... I would cover your tank... at the very least partially... giving them somewhere to relax and feel safe... as well as possibly slightly cooler... A few "hides" in your tank might make them feel more secure as well... and help them mark their territory when ready to breed... Are they staying low in the tank... or swimming near the surface? |

Salting is a preventitive strategy... lowering stress, stimulating slime coat production which wards off any possible disease attack.... combats high nitrite levels... We normally salt (in this case) to 1ppt... or 1kg of salt to 1000L... which is roughly your tank size.... Use pure sea salt.... And see if you can get hold of a water test kit... that measures ammonia, nitrite and nitrate... What is the water temperature in your fish tank? |

Also check out the Useful Information Forum, link below. http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11 You may then understand why in most cases, water replacement is not necessary as maintenance for AP. In fact, water replacement will sometimes affect the AP system and its beneficial bacteria growth. |
