hi all,

i have been hooking through the forum, searching for an answer or two...

our lovely introduced mate the cane toad.... how do we stop them from taking over the ap system??

are they dangerous to the fish?? are their eggs eaten by the fish?? or is the whole cycle just destroy the eggs???

on my place there would be approximately 6 or 7 trillion cane toads.... well heaps anyway :wink:

do the tanks NEED covers? or just elevation..

the golf swing is good... but the stench of rotting toad is a little overbearing... havent any close neighbours that annoy me..

i guess this was once just qlder problem.. but i believe they are spread far and wide...

You could move to NSW. :mrgreen: For a while at least.
Not sure how they go in the FT. In my system the fish eat the smaller frogs and play rough with the larger ones till they float. But KT's have some serious aftertaste(poison).

If fish eat the toads; fish will die.
It's that simple.
I've heard they make quite good leather. I like everybody else, have no idea how to control Cane Toads.

yeah kp...

nearly everything dies that eats them...

a recent doco i saw stated that the toads were in kakadu and in their first year there, they killed about 70% of the goanna population.

apperantly currawongs have realized they can be eaten from the underside.... but i dont know how true that is..

if you lick them it is a good stone....... so i'm told.....

They dry and smoke the skin also.

The water rats have also found out that eating them from the underside works well. we used to find them all the time at our farm with the bellies zipped open. I have also heard about the birds flipping them over, never seen it happen but they are bright enough...
AFAIK the tadpoles have enough poison in them to keep them toxic until the develop thier own poison making glands so they are bad from day one. But the toads don't really jump very high so if your tanks are high enough and there is no easy platform for they to climb up you should be ok. I have seen them get into a 10lt bucket but nothing taller than that without assistance.

They do make a soul satifying "thump" off the cricket bat too.

thanks axl,

the eggs getting through the system was a big concern. same as the tadpoles.. did not kow if they were poisonous.. i was unsure if the tanks needed to be covered all the time. i have noticed the toads dont jump like frogs..so i will keep the beds and tanks up off the ground.. but they do have their ways around things..

i find the suckas in pipes and cracks all through the garden.. and feared they would get into the pipes and into the sump or fish tank.... but we will see how we go..


do you still get the huge green frogs in north qld?? i remember as a kid finding them in bessa blocks and the laundry under the house in townville... back then they scared the daylight out of me!! i havent seen one around here in 20 yrs..

Our yard and house ( especially the house) is a haven for frogs :shock: Buggers get everywhere

green frogs live in most of the houses i have been in... they eat the cockys and bugs and we never needed to spray the place...

now we have an awful lot of geckos lately... the chirping type... bloody annoying...

I think the frogs will eat them too , given a chancs. A lady down the road had sunbirds nesting on ehr kitchen window till a green tree frog ate the female :o :shock:

Get a few green frogs around the pool. But they don't like to swim in there anymore.:shark:
Do cane toads climb like regular frogs. The green ones go straight up the glass door if they see something they like.

no i am sure the cane toads dont have suction bits on the end of their toes.... they have a harder toe.

nothing will slow them down. that only stops them from spreading up :-(
This flipping over and eating the belly is an interesting trick. Do we have any articles backing up the eyewitness accounts? Is it enough to slow or perhaps halt their expansion?
