I was wondering about that as well last week. I had a little bit of fungus on 2 of my fish (not in ap) and it got me thinking about the effect of these if it was in a system with plants and if any of it is stored in the fish. I'm guessing if it was just a dip, and you purged the fish in clean water for a few days after the plants would be ok, not so sure about residual amounts in the fish's fat and tissue though. |

What about collodial silver? While they are a lot of 'claims' made for this there is at least some scientific evidence that silver is a very powerful bactericide and fungicide. As a hospital tank additive it may be worth a go. |

We were discussing this in relation specifically to antibiotics once before. I think it was nick that rightly pointed out that we as humans ingest antibiotics ourselves at times to treat illness and accordingly the likelyhood 1. there being any residual in a fish months later and 2. it affecting us would be low. As for other medications, my view would probably be different. In relation to medicating in general, I'd prefer to use nothing but salt - but then I've never been unfortunate enough to have a large batch of fish come down with something serious. One further consideration is that we have no idea what the fish farms have treated fingerlings with before we get them. I just like to hope that 9+ months later, particularly given the size of the original fish - we'd be pretty okay. |

i'd hazard a guess the farms aren't treating fish with anythinhg toxic. i'm more worried about anti fungals |

The most commonly used treatment in pond based aquaculture is Formalin...... Formaldehyde.... |

from what i can find if they stick to the recommended doses it's safe. i guess it comes down to how much you trust your supplier. |

I find salt is easiest to use with dips anyway. Not a fan of just adding it to setups all the time. But ya I often give new fish a freshwater dip (if they are marine fish) or a saltwater dip (if they are freshwater fish) before moving them into new systems. No longer than 2 minutes. Nothing serious but it can certainly ruin the day of many problem parasite species. |
