These worms are in the filter of my system. What are they and how do I treat for them and to do so without contamination or killing the plants. Thanks in advance.

Found them a couple times in a filter I used to use. Didn't seem to be bothering anything and the fish got excited when I cleaned the filter and poured them into the tank. They're called blood worms.

Hi there, looks like a midge fly larvae to me, probably also called blood worms as Aufin said.

They are completely harmless. The adults look very similar to mosquitos, but if you look closely you can see that they don't have a proboscis to bite with, they are harmless as well. Some of them have kinda fuzzy antennas.

The larvae break down organic waste in the system. And they don't harm fish. I'd just leave them alone. I've had them in my system since shortly after it was started. No problems with them at all.

Third the blood worms. Dont worry about them. Scoop them out and toss in the tank. My fish will eat them. Completely harmless and natural.
