I'm setting up a new small aquaponics with a 60 gallon tank. I cycled it with powdered ammonia over a few weeks. It was fully cycled a few weeks ago, able to bring 1ppm ammonia to 0 after a day. All water quality metrics are good: 80F, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, low nitrate, 0.2 - 0.4 EC, pH 8.0, dissolved oxygen at 87% or so. The pH has risen to the high side, not sure why. I started with RO water at 6.7 pH.

So, I added my first fish, 15 tilapia fingerlings from liveaquaponics. They are all slowly dying. I think they are diseased, perhaps Streptococcus. Can anyone help identify the blistering around the gills in the attached photos? Is the tank doomed? Do I need to start over?

I just salted the talk to 1 ppt. Probably won't work.

Bump. Sorry for your fish losses. Any us experts out there? Did the salting help?Maybe stress/shock from transport, did they travel far?

No salt didn’t help. I lost all the fish. The fish came from Florida, I’m in California, so yes, they travelled far.

Someone advised in another post that filling the system with reverse osmosis water was probably the issue. It’s pure and soft, but the poster said that fish don’t like soft water. I did a large water change with spring water, hopefully that was the issue.

Sorry to hear. Yeah that is one hell of a trip, did they fly them?

When you restock maybe try for a closer supplier or different species. Or very light stocking, until the systems ages a bit.
