So the recent news on the eradication of carp in Oz (primarily the Murray-Darling) is an interesting read. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-13/m ... ts/7084586 Apparently scientists have been for the last 7 years, investigating the potential effect of an Indonesian strain of herpes on the carp. The aim is to kill off the carp and leave all other aquatic creatures unscathed. Seems unrealistic you might think? Some comments from one of the leading doctors is concerning, although Im sure nothing will be released until all studies are proven. Quote: "The main thrust of our work at CSIRO has been to look for any untoward effects of this virus on other species. "We don't want the virus to affect anything other than carp. "Over quite a number of years we've looked at about 13 species of native fish ... and we've not been able to find any evidence of disease or virus multiplication in any of those species. "So we don't believe it does anything in any other species." Dr McColl said the scientists have also investigated the affect of the virus on yabbies, mice and chickens and have also researched cases where humans have come into contact with the disease. "We're fairly confident that it's not going to cause problems elsewhere," Dr McColl said. Whats your thoughts peeps? |

.. Only thought.. that history has shown that once.released, the control of lost.. Who is to.say that it could not spread.to Koi.growers.. Who is to say that it won't mutate to affect .. Very interesting, all the same.. .. |

If they are calling this a success: "The myxoma and calici viruses were effective in knocking down rabbit numbers." then I'm a bit concerned! Not really very effective IMO, there are still huge numbers of rabbits around here! Yes it kills a few rabbits here and there, but it is not what I'd call effective control. If it really doesn't affect other species, then fine, otherwise it could be just like cane toads all over again - a disaster. |

There is always s risk that something could go wrong however if extensive research has been done to look into the risks and it is considered minimal then I'm all for it. There are examples of successful bio controls in Australia such as the cactoblastus moth which obliterates prickly pear infestations. This is a really promising prospect for the Murray Darling which is under so much pressure from invasive species such as carp. Wait a minute, how am I going to cycle my system without Charlie Carp? Yes we still see rabbits but we don't see the massive numbers from pre mxo days Biggest problem I see is the periodic die offs hundreds of tons turning up on banks multiple times a year , the hours and cost of cleaning up . |

Cane toads. Granted some one else demonstrated that biological controls have been successful with moths, but I would be very very wary. Us humans don't have a good track record 'playing god' in a sense. |

Carps are strong fishes, they will adapt/evolve and come back to bite our ass for sure. I think we have to learn to live with them rather than trying to reduce/eradicate their numbers. This is another case of spending tax-payers money on useless researches. |

The concern is not that it wont be effective, the concern is so many carp will die in a matter of weeks and how to clean up/control the amount of dead fish. |
