Hi all,

Im not sure if this has already been covered, but Im looking for a supplier of Tilapia for my personal AP system. This is not for commercial endeavors, just my mom's backyard. Ive read up on the situation for California and Tilapia, but it all seems to be related to commercial growing. Is it ok to have Tilapia if its just for my mom? If so, any ideas where to get them for someone in Northern California? Thanks already, this site is awesome.

Hi,
Tilapia are not legal in Northern California. And in Emeryville you will never be warm enough for Tilapia to really do well without supplemental heat year round. I'd suggest you look at blue gill. They taste good, they're lively, and they're legal!

Check out "The Lucky Garden" in dublin. They have an aquaponic store and sell fish.

@Smatthew Thanks so much for the info. Although I live in Eville, my AP build is in Fairfield which in general is much warmer than the coastal East Bay. I will definitely be contacting The Lucky Garden, great heads up!

If you're in fairfield - another option for fish is the Freshwater Fish Company in Elk Grove. Shoot them an email at info@freshwaterfishco.com and they'll email you when they have another fish sale (usually once a month). They charge $1/fish for 2-3" bluegill.
