Hi fish experts.

I think this may be my first HSM (had another when grow bed collapsed but that didn't hurt anything)

My new SP (2 weeks in system) are having problems. I've had 4 float to the top [dead] with a furry slimmy sort of covering on them. some of my living fish have the same stuff on tail, fins and spines.

Any ideas PLEASE?

Is salt the answer? What level can most plants tolerate?

At the moment, I only have city water for any water change (looks hopefully to the sky seeing only blue sky and burning sun)

Sounds like a fungus, is their any red/blood patches on them? I think(please correct me if I'm wrong guys) salt is the failsafe remedy(up to 6ppt) to save your fish. may not be the best for your plants but .............. how many fish do you have?

GG - is hopefully fungus and not sap.

Treating with salt is definitelly the go right now. 3 or 4ppt. Some of your plants may suffer, but in the end you need to save your fish so you need to take that hit. Do you have neutraliser to remove chlorine/chloramine?

Sap is a fungus.

Make an executive decision on what you want more, your fish or your plants.

Pull out your SP and inspect them, if the fungus is covering most of their body then they're prolly not going to make it. If it is in a small patch or patches then dose to at least 6ppt preferably 10PPt.

you need to make the choice. it is extremely fast spreading

and I wouldn't suggest you dip your mouse into 6ppt water

I've dumped 5 kg of salt into the system. Now fingers crossed to see what happens.

A bit late, but here's the fungus that I had:


I raised salt to 2-3ppt which stuffed up the strawberries and the lettuce a little, but then I reduced it after a week or so and they're growing well at 2ppt.
