Hi all

I have recently found ICH on the trout in my 1500l aquaponics tank and have moved them into a quarantine tank that I have salted to 6ppt, they are doing well and eating well I would just like to know how long can I leave them salted so that I can leave the 1500l tank as long as possible with out fish to kill off the ICH with out having a host to feed off.
I have heard there cycle can last as long as 60 days as my temp is around 10 degrees C at the moment

hi,
are you sure its ich?
since your ft is empty you could heat it rapidly to above 24 to shock and also speed up the ich cycle. (your biofilter will suffer but less than the ich)
there are many other conditions in trout that have similar symptoms.

Thanks Ben

I did find small white spots on some of the perch I previously had in there and a couple of the trout, the trout have been swimming quite erratically and randomly swimming very fast round the whole tank and on there sides at the bottom looking like they are trying to rub of what ever is on them.
Other than that they are feeding quite well.

As my temp does get down to about 6 deg c at time bumping it up to 24 could be quite costly especially in 1000l ft and 300l of gb or would it not? I'm not sure havnt done it before

raising your tank to 24 with trout in there is simply not wise, its close to thier death zone.

i suggested raising the temperature of the tank while the trout is in the hospital tank.

and after a salt bath i would slowly exchange water to the salinity of your system before putting them back.

Don't change the temperature rapidly or they will float upside down :shock:

again, i suggest to do that while the fish are in their saltbath in a hospital tank
a hospital tank is not linked to the main system! so temperature changes in the main system will not affect the fish.

Don't worry Ben I gotcha. Heat the EMPTY (well, empty of fish) big tank is what he means.

What would be the best way to heat up a 1500L tank? Assuming you're in an area that doesn't require heating normally.

I'm assuming running back and forth with pots of water from the stove isn't the ideal way.

With the pump off (GB off line), you could heat it with a 400W aquarium heater over a few days to get up to temp.

Thanks all I shall try raising the temp of the main FT to try kill off the ICH, but in my first post I would still like to know how long you can leave the trout salted for in 6 ppt with out doing more harm than good
