Hello all,

Over the past couple of weeks I've had 3 dead fish, all of them have been the smaller ones. The levels are fine, but since they are all smaller than the average sized fish I'm thinking the larger ones are being territorial. Any thoughts?

if the small ones are getting bashed by the larger ones they may have some visible marks or damage somewhere. do you have any pic's of the dead ones.

Hello all,

ok, it's just not the smaller fish. But I've been having one die on me on a daily basis, 3 of them in one night! Any suggestions?

There's a long list of things it could be but we'll need some information like water parameters including water temperature and pics of the system would probably help.

For starters though, if you have lots of algae in the system the oxygen levels could go down over night. pH and temp could also be the problem.

Have you salted the Fish tank water? Is the fish tank open at the top?

Cheers

Hi Scotty,

I have a 55 gal tank that had about 15 tilapia fingerlings, I'm down to 5. The ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels have continuously been normal. Just yesterday, I saw one of them acting weirdly, instead of being horizontal he was vertical and looked like he was having a seizure. Not sure what is causing this. What did you mean by salting the system. Also, are there plants that we should not use in an aquaponics system, I'm talking about edible plants... Thanks for your help!
