Oh crap. This is what happens when you spend too much time on the computer and doing engineering calculations rather than actually getting your hands dirty. And everything was going so well. I was adding an "organic nitrogen source" for weeks before adding fish, even kept a bottle in the house so none got wasted. I was wondering if my test kit was dead (it is a bit old) because I wasn't detecting anything but then I thought well there is about 32000L in there. Also, while the system hasn't been running it has been full of water and had a bunch of aquatic life in there which included a few red fin. I didn't do any tests yesterday but the day before everything was 0 and today I've got ammonia and nitrite. |

I've been thinking about why I had 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites two days ago and have suddenly had a spike. Was looking at one of the GBs and I found a bunch of seedling mix containing slow release fertiliser pellets in the flow form the FT. I'm guessing the kids put it there. Is this likely or would the pellets release their fertiliser too slowly to cause a sudden spike? |

Ok so now I'm confused. 36hrs without feed and: Ammonia is up but nitrite is down. Isn't it meant to go the other way? Attachment: oh crap 4.JPG [ 16.85 KiB | Viewed 10932 times ] I'm reading the ammonia as 4 and the nitrite as .25. This means the ammonia has doubled and the nitrite has decreased by a factor of ~4. In case any one asks the tank is clean. Fish seem much happier with white blotchyness mostly gone and where it is still prevalent has gone to a dark gray. |

So now I'm really confused. I was contemplating a water change because the ammonia was so high this morning so I tested the water again this evening to see how things were going. Attachment: Oh Crap 5.JPG [ 17.68 KiB | Viewed 10901 times ] Now it looks to me like the Ammonia has dropped to .25 or .5 from around 4 this morning and the nitrite which was maybe .25 seems to now be 0. The water changed I'd contemplated doesn't seem necessary. I think I can start feeding again but at a reduced rate. |

maybe the slow release is not so slow release in water? |

![]() Its not a "normal" cycling because it has had fish in it for years (12 redfin) and there is lots of life in the GBs and water. Adding 60 fish (58 now, lost one more this morning) is a big increase in the biomass though. The sudden increase and then decrease is ammonia has got me stumped. |

hmm I wonder if you're going through another mini-cycle due to the change in biomass? but I guess I'm just repeating what you just said

What's your growbed volume on this system Stuart? |
