Post subject:  Sick fish paranoia

I was so excited to have my first AP system set up. 55 gallon tank in my kitchen 8) fish where eating and plants where growing (fast) then my first asin catfish got white patches and went jaw up dead. The next day the bigger one died
Ok, so i need to get a water testing kit. And remove the metal fork i was using to weight down the air stone and buy some salt.
But as i'm researching to try to figure out why my fish are dying, i come across this : http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/Travis/Aquaponics-and-Food-Safety.pdf section 8 reads bateria infections that effect both fish and humans. The system is in MY KITCHEN!! Seriously, how dangerous is it to have water from desised fish in your sink where you do your dishes? Never mind that, we ate some herbs (washed off) that where growing in the water.
I'm looking to understand the real dangers of possible infections before i try this again. I seriously don't need to be giving my family V. parahaemolyticus. Yet, i really really want an AP system and i want it inside.
Advice, general comments, reality checks are all welcome.

The white patches are most likely fungal, and salting up will kill that off. You are more likely to get a deadly disease from a door knob than your AP setup. A colony of good bacteria will keep the baddies at bay.
