Hey all, was wondering if anyone has seen this before. This is the only trout with an issue. All others in the three tanks are fine and larger than him.
Last readings a couple of days ago were (my system is nearly cycled and I am feeding a little once a week)
Ph 7.2
Am 0
Ni 4
Na 40

Will retest tomorrow morning as it is late.

I have salted to 1ppt and as i said other are fine and feeding well when I do. Blood in the photos i s from where I dispached him as he was upside down at the top of the tank

Some sort of infection, increase salt to 3ppt.

You didn't have a jumper at some stage that you put back into the tank? We had one like that, jumped out, put him back, all good. But then a week or two later he looked a bit like that..

Your nitrite levels are 4? That's very high..

Nitrites are dropping, ammonia is .25 the nitrate eating bacteria taking thier time to get going in this cold. Have taken some GB sludge from my other system to try and kick it a bit.

More deaths in other system. Had a power outage on Friday. 1.5 hrs and backup failed. Got oxygen in but found one trout floating in the evening. Flared gills.

Other traout and SP seem fine. Had another two trout die today, no air issues as we have 55l/min going in the tank. Tested and the readings are
Ph 6
Am 0
Ni 0
Na 40

Had eggshells in the system to try and raise the ph but to no effect. Any ideas? Fish are not near the surface or slow, eating OK.

Could the PH be the issue?

A little bit but that was after feeding. Didnt seem to bad.

What does the oily coating indicate? Good thing was the main system with 35 trout was fine with its backup.

how are you reading the ph? some test kits only go down to 6 and it could be much lower..
raising it quickly will stress the fish,, so don't try to push it up to fast

Sorry I should have explained Badger. Its similar to the oily coating left after you feed but a bit thicker, sometimes makes long lasting bubbles on the surface. Its basically a protien slime from the fish that will caot the surface and hinder oxygen exchange at the surface.

Its a clear sign the fish are stressed when this slime is present.

Its rare you hear of someone loosing one trout, usually others follow. Ive stressed my trout out before through trying to catch them, I killed one and then a couple of others gasped around the surface and later died. There was a thick slime on the surface that was expelled through stress.

Maybe the power outage knocked one of and stressed the others out :dontknow:

Yeah not sure. They were ok this morning and temps are 16c in the tank so not that. Just wondering how to get the ph back up to around 7

Cant remember your system parameteres but about 1/4 cup of slacked lime in 1000L should do it. Test before and after then re-check tommorrow and see what movements it has made. You could also use Eco-rose but its a bit stronger, I think its potassium bicarbonate from memory.
