Is this the plant that's nearby?

if so it's very toxic to fish.
I was losing one or two silvers every time it rained, and some water would splash into my tank from this bush.

My Silver Perch keep dying. I have done tests and all the readings are OK. I have changed water several times. My vegees are thriving. The system has been up and running for 3years and I had similar problems with Barra and trout. I can think of nothing else but some poison. Cats are a problem in the area and I am wondering if their spray ( deadly for some plants ) may be contaminating the beds or the pond itself. The pond is covered by shade cloth. The dead fish look great and show no physical signs of abuse. Any ideas? Peter |

Thanks all for the replies. The test kit is a couple of years old and appears in good condition. There is a native tree/bush nearby ( name unknown ) which I could cut out. Will try that. The fish are dying in batches of two or three at a time. I will get some photos and post them . Peter |

I discovered it was the problem because I had a feeling I was seeing fish deaths after rain. I was sure, but I had kept records of deaths in my spread sheet chart that I keep records of my water tests etc. I had only recently cycled, so I was still doing a lot of tests and keeping good records. I got the rain data from the meteorology web site and dropped it into my graph, and sure enough within a day or so of a rain, I'd see fish deaths. I only had 20 fish but the data was obvious once the graphs were laid over each other. So I took a few readings of rainwater thinking it might be a pH thing or something. Then during a rain went outside to look at my system and watch. And found drips falling from the leaves of this plant. The conversation and my cries for help are in this thread |
