Hi what are the best vegetables to grow in aquaponics when there is low nutrients and the system is not doing that well, I need to try and get it up and going.

You want to look more at what is going to grow for the particular season, and the amount of light your beds get where they are located. Don't worry, over the next couple of months your system will speed up as you put more feed into it..

If your beds are in full sun I would be planting summer plants now, great time for planting tomatoes...

If you are worried about your water being green another alternative is to float some plants on the water surface such as watercress, gotu cola (arthritis plant) laksa leaf (vietnamese mint) and mints such as chocolate, apple and mint basil. This makes it a little decorative, provides shelter for the fish and shades the water from sunlight. The fish also nibble at the roots and leaves that are in the water.
Plants that do well would include celery, parsley, silverbeet or rainbow chard, loose leaf lettuces, tomatoes and many others, adding a little seasol will also help if you have low fish numbers and very small fish.
