Was having a close look at a vid I took of my community tank and noticed some white markings on one or two silvers, so I thought I would salt the tank to 3ppt. Then I remembered that tandanus catfish do not like salt. Done some searching but most of the talk is for channel cats etc in the states. Anyone know how much they can handle |

I can tell you from direct experience that 3ppt is not a problem for them. |

I read somewhere that young ones are a lot more susceptible to salinity than older ones |

Rivers are not usually called salt affected until they're greater than 6ppt at least. However, you're right that it affects the young fish's development. We see it over here too with pygmy perch and cobbler. |

just got an email back from my fish supplier he said The Catties do ok in prolonged periods of 5ppt. They tolerate up too about 10ppt, but not suddenly. The salinity needs to be adjusted slowly. also just read soltuns doc |

G,day mantis, How are your catfish going? I am contemplating getting some after the trout finish up this summer. Temp. range? Anything else I should know? Not really planning to eat them, I just reckon they look cool. Cheers Chris. |

Hey Chris, one of the main problems here in WA is getting hold of them. We have half a dozen or so but they cost us about $8 each and they were very small, aquarium supplies... |

Yeah thats probably why I hadn't seen many for sale around the place... Whats the story with buying fish from interstate? Livefish? Might be easier to stick with the original plan of silver perch... |

Lots of conversation about this around the forum. Basically to the best of my knowledge it is illegal to do it without approvals from fisheries dept.. |

Hmmm, too hard basket... Maybe you should get approval, import a few thousand of them and then sell me twenty. |

Definately a no go, fisheries wont let anyone sell fingerlings in WA other than Trout, Silver Perch and Barramundi. The only loop hole is if they are to be kept in aquariums as it is thought that with the high prices charged and limited numbers that the chance of illegal stockings into public waterways is minimal. |

Was this general retail EB? Could you tell us where you bought them from? I am keen on a few just for the novelty factor and they seem to co-exist with perch happily. Had a bit of a look around last year but was put off wih the 16-24 dollar price range $8 is heaps bettererCheers |
