Im not saying thats what killed the fish, its merely a result of having a dead fish in water. It could have been low oxygen or sometimes fish just die, the fungus will always be there salt or not.

yes hydrogen peroxide is one fix, as is formaldehyde, but they are both overkill for aquaponics.

kij2, Looks like everything is moving in the right direction. If the white stuff is only on dead fish it's normal.

Keep a sharp eye on your ammonia/nitrite (daily) for a while. If you see either one rising you should re-examine your stocking density. Also, if you have not already, you should plant like crazy to help control your nitrates and get some veggies :)

Good Luck and post some pics!

Thanks aboman, I will definitely do that. Taking daily readings is kind of difficult since my system is about 30 km/20 miles from my home. I have it at a family farm. Plan is to expand within 12 months to a semi commercial system.

But tomorrow I am going out there to plant a new bed, since everything in it (lettuce) died, assuming from the 12 ppt salinity.

And tomorrow I will post some pics.

@ jeezy.. No I didn't find any strange swimming behaviour like you mentioned. Most of the fish I found with this white slim on them were already dead, but the one I posted at the beginning of this thread was still alive. At first I thought it was just the fish decaying after they died but when I found this little guy still alive I started to get concerned. Anyhow I think it had something to do with the cold temps over the winter.. low 50ºs.. Ever since the water temps came up I have had no more deaths or the white slime.

You can get in on live fish, particularly in spots that's have been scratched or picked at by other fish for territorial behavior. And it does mainly happen in cold water as i believe that's what the fungus likes best and it slows downs the fish's metabolism and immune response. Feeding them properly and handling them with nice smooth nets and wet hands helps.
