Thanks to all for the great advice. It's been over two weeks now and the fish are looking good. I also put them all back together a week ago and so far, no signs of violence. I think perhaps it was a bacterial infection. Anyway, I followed Amacafish's advice to the letter and I have healthy fish again.

Today for the first time, one of them came to the surface and ate when I threw breakfast to them!!!! Pretty exciting stuff!!!
