Nah that is the price from a retailer in NSW who is buying it out of VIC and having it delivered to site for me.....

Good idea. A trickle filter will help cool it. They act like an evaporative cooler...

I also thought that the warmer the environment the more importance placed on providing more oxygen.... especially in those temps... ? I'd have an air pump in there just as reassurance.

Why has no one posted that 32 degrees is the upper limit for perch? If you want perch you have to provide more air, and you will need an evaporative / reverse cycle cooler.

All the shade in the world is not going to help you. Your going to see water temps in the mid to high 30s.

50 fish (initially - now 38)... in a 700L fish tank... a 250L grow bed ... no additional aeration...

pH initially 7.6.... but adjusted to 6-6.4 with acid...

Ammonia (at least) 0.25 - 0.5...

Nitrites 2..

Water temp 32...

Take your pick Faye....

Low DO due to high water temp, and/or overstocking....

High water temp... exceeding species tolerance...

Inability to exchange oxygen due to nitrite imbalance vs haemoglobin...

pH swing....

I suppose it could be summed up by saying... it was a perfect recipe for a slow simmering fish soup....

Thought I may have missed a nitrite reading, so I went back and checked and to my knowledge the nitrite is 0. While 50 fish is a lot they are really, really small at this stage so I do not see that as being the cause of death. :dontknow:

Sorry Faye, misread the first post... "nitrate 2 is 0".... as "nitrite 2"...

And it wasn't the size that killed them...

i live in broken Hill, we get temps of around 50, but are currently getting high 30ies. i have an ibc tank and used scorier rock due to its weight and small holes, i have had my system up for 1 week and i have one loan gold fish in the tank to make sure it is safe for when i get my perch and cod on sunday. ill keep you all posted

Living up your way really think Barra would be a better option, they thrive best in 28 temp water, it's water below 22 they dont like. Have not had any problem with them eating each other. We have a fine mist spray which we use to cool the medium down during extended hot periods. The barra come from Anthony Aris at Kimberley Tafe if you are interested.

One might be able to run constant Flood to minimize the amount of heating the media causes to the system water but that is probably not the complete answer to the issue of fish that don't like hot water in a climate that gets that hot. Add air and run the pump constant through the day and then do flood and drain overnight to take advantage of as much cooling as possible might save some more of the fish in the short term while you figure out some other ways to keep the water cooler.

Exactly what I do in client greenhouse systems stocking trout... towards the end of the season when things get a bit warm... like this week...
