Rupe won't believe it either, but decided to turn off air to get last of trout out, I have been told for 2 years that trout wont last 30 minutes without air, especially in hot weather, BULLSHIT.....I turned my air off and pumps for 3 hours last night, water 20.3c fish happy as, had to turn pumps back on for fish in other tank but left air pumps off, 26 hours now, water at 22.5c and trout are happy as pigs in shit, around 10 left in 2500lt water and tank 2 connected with 2500lt more, 50 SP in other tank and around 40 marron, have run 2 big air pumps for 2 years now to keep trout alive I thought

wow, that's pretty impressive. But I would put it down to the fact that you only have 10 of them swimming in 2500L of water. unless we are talking 10 humongous monster fish

What are your normal temperature ranges for trout? - is 22° pretty normal, or is that on the high side?

Well you guys have been telling me they need air....
But I think my setup has a bit to do with it, they aren't monster fish about 400gms each, but have the 50 Silvers also, trout are meant to be on the edge at 22c but my water has been above 23, two tanks must help out.... a couple of times last winter I rushed home because of blackout and hooked inverter to car and left idling for a couple of hours :dontknow:
I guess I wouldn't suggest try it, maybe Murphy's law, because I want them to float they wont
Go on Holidays end of this week so wanted trout out so kids wouldn't stress if they carked it whilst I was away, will let them go now and see if they make another season, wanted to get silvers out of Marron tank also, but will see what happens, *frack* the trout

I would believe anything you tell me Nocky.
Your two tanks are connected are they not?? If you were pumping water into the perch tank oxygenated water would have gone thru into your trout tank wouldnt it?? With the low stocking density you have this was obviously more than sufficient to keep them happy.

you can only dissolve so much oxygen into the water. You could have 100 airpumps going and it won't do shit once you reach saturation.

If your setup sufficiently maintains o2 saturation through cascading water then the airpump is unneeded.

If you REALLY want to know whats going on, you need to test for dissolved o2. There's a drop test you can can use instead of buying the expensive meters.

10 x 400gm trout in 2500L @ 20 degrees for 2-3 hours... yeah I'd believe it.... try 40-50, and time how long they last...

As to water temps... I've run trout up to 27 degrees over last summer.. not for more than a day or two.... and only with lots of air and no feeding...

22 degrees doesn't phase me at all.... the Holmes-A-Court system has been constantly around 22 degrees almost since the trout went in.... and often sits around 24-25....

But 40 trout in 3000L... with no air and pumping.... had them near death after about 1-2 hours...

Having turned your pumps back on.... the grow bed returns would probably be providing enough air for that number of fish... wouldn't make a habit of it though.. especially if the temp rises... and you're feeding them...

Your fish, your system...

Previous posts have related to most people.... runinng 20-30+ fish per 1000L...

I had 30 trout in 1000ltrs - when the temp hit @23 they were cruising at the top - so I offed them to go away for a week. after that week it took 6 for the temps to get back up to mid 20's in sunny Melbourne! Bah!

Gav I am impressed some does listen to me  I did completely shut down the system for 8 hours yesterday, kept eye on SP and still happy trout, water at 18c in morning and 22c by afternoon, this is by digital thermo with sensor at bottom, I have no doubt the the Ferguson Springs Trout are super powered
They will die for sure now as I have decided to keep them for another season, see how they go, I will leave my wonderful Silver Perch (Also from Ferguson Springs :thumbright: in the Marron tank for now, both seem to be getting along, SP can eat though, I think these have doubled in size since I have had them
No this post isn't sponsored by Ferguson Springs :thumbright:

Yeah be interesting to see if you can get the Trout through the summer. So far it hasnt been too hard as we havent really had any long hot spells like we got last summer. Good to hear the Silvers are going well, they sure do love eating once the water temps are up a bit.
Thanks for all the publicity Nocky but unfortunately I have nothing to sell atm.
