OK, about one year later.

Three trout have survived till three weeks ago when one got trapped in a jilgi stick hide.
I have removed the Jilgi hide.
The remaining two are vigerous and healthy. One of them is a monster while the other is about half its size.

I am prepared to give trout another go. I would limit my tank to say about 50 fish.

My floating plants are looking great and need an occasional brutal trimming.

My grow beds are growing great chicory type minature lettuce and also chives.
I assume I am producing low nitrate levels and because of this not every plant I have tried to grow has been a success.

My filter medium tank produces good fertilize for my olive trees when ever I clean out the clay balls, Japanese plastic filament mats and zeolite.

I also have some large marron and freshwater cobbler in the tank.

These Trout have been with me so long now that I don't know if I have the heast to eat them.

I also have a few Koi in there just for colour.

This leaves me wondering just how big a rainbow trout can grow? If I know that then I can plan for the party and you can bring the salad and mayonnaise.

To infinity and beyond.

From what I hear.. and Troutman will give me the nodd or kick my butt...
Trout becoming egg bound is a problem, unlike a lot of fish, trout don't re-absorb the eggs.
I fear your will get only 2 seasons out of your trout unless you strip them  .

Hey don't forget your neighbours Trev 8)

So I guess I need to find out if the big one is a male or a female.
Stripping the male might be problematic.
If some one had some at about 5 kg then I guess I have a way to go yet.
I also guess if I introduce young trout then I will need to get rid of the big one first.
Perhaps Troutman knows the answer to that. :geek:

Spot on C1, though Trev you dont need to strip the males as they wont die if they dont get rid of their milt. If you guys want to grow trout year round to a big size then I would suggest getting Triploids next time around. Without putting energy into producing eggs they will grow much quicker and larger and wont die from being egg bound.
If you are going to put small fish in the tank I think you would be better off removing the large ones first.

OK, I'm convinced.

I will eat the big ones.
Butter, garlic and fresh dill from the garden and gently pan fried.
Then accompanied by some steamed baby potatoes and carrot and perhaps asparagus or brocholi.

Before I do that I will need to have some more trout lined up and have them ready for replacement, to go into the pond.
