I have just set up my first aquaponics system. It comprises of a 2000L fish tank, 1000L sump and three 500L grow beds. I put 75 fingerling trout and around 80 yabbies into the system a week ago. At the same time I seeded the bed with a vial of bacteria from Backyard aquaponics and planted my beds. I am concerned about my water tests. todays results
Temp - 20C
PH 8
NH3- between 1 and 2
NO2 - .25

I have read that at that pH and temp my max ammonia reading should be .53. So my question is -

Should I do a water change today to bring the ammonia reading down or should I let nature take its course?.

The ammonia has been reading 1 for around 5 days. I have done two water changes in this time. After a water change it goes back to 1 by the next day.

I have got access to my Father ornamental Koi pond. Should I wash the filters into the grow beds? Will this fasten the cycling time or do I just need to be patient?

the fish appear happy and are eating approx 1tablespoon of food each day for the last few days. I really don't want them to die....if I can help it! Will this high ammonia level be doing them harm?

Thanks for your help.

That ammonia level will be harming them, but the bigger problem is going to be the Nitrites that will result shortly. Stop all feeding off the fish until you get your water under control, or they will all be very dead, very quickly.

If you can do a graduall water change, thats what I'd be doing. Have a hose running into the sump tank slowly, while the pump is running, letting it gradually overflow, or siphon some out onto grass etc. Doing sudden large water changes upsets systems, and should only be used as a last resort.

If you have not already added salt, I suggest you do. You will need 3 or 4 kg of salt, add this to the sump tank after changing some water out. Standard pool salt, either lake harvested or ocean. Do not use table salt. Salt will stop the fish from being killed by nitrite so quickly, and will help them during this stressful period.

You have a pretty high fish load for a brand new system, so very little food for the next 3 or 4 weeks is going to be the key. The fish dont need much to survive.

Add as much aeration to the tank as you can afford.

Good Luck :?

Not really an excessive load OBO.... 2000L tank.... @ 3kg/100L... that's 60 fish...

75 fingerlings shouldn't be stressing the system that much... even new... has 3 x 500L growbeds...

Just important to follow the "goldern rules"..... no more than one tablespoon of feed per day...

Knocking the feed off for a couple of days ... as OBO suggests.... would help....

But, even stopping your feed now... isn't going to change your ammonia load... due to over-feeding previously...

Ultimately it will drop and the nitrites will spike... if you can get some "gunk"... it will force the ammonia > nitrite > nitrate cycle along much more rapidly...

I will go and do a slow water change now and I wont feed them for a few days. My results this morning
Temp 16C
ammonia - between 1 and 2
Nitrite - .25
pH 8
I can either top the system up with bore water or scheme water. I spoke to Joel at Backyard aquaponics and he didn't think there was a problem with topping up with scheme water. He thinks the chlorine levels in perth water are not too bad and I can use the water straight out of the tap.

What does everyone think? when I accidentally drained the tank I used half scheme water and half bore water and the fish seemed to be okay. I did run the tap slowly for most of the day.

As long as your local water supply isn't treated with "chloromines".... then you'll probably get away with it...

You can age water treated with "chlorine".... by putting it into a container, adding a bubbler and leaving it in the sun to offgas for a day...

I'm not really set up to be able to store the water to age it. My test results today
temp 16C
NH3 between 1 and 2
NO2 .50
Nitrate - 0

I didn't feed the fish yesterday. Should I feed them today?
I added two kilos of salt to the system. The fish seem happy still.
