Hello, a mate of mine was speaking to a aquaculture expert from a university in perth and he suggested using chicken poo as a source of fish food, he said it would be ok to use.

Has anyone else heard anything about it or anything different ?

If viable it would be a good money saver as long as the fish were getting the required neturents.

You would get an enormous ammonia spike immediately I would think. Plus I would want to eat anything that eats chicken poop.

In Thailand chicken pen above fish pond is normall what we do to feed chicken poo to fish.

But I'm not sure that fish eat poo or green water(plankton) or both.

In AP green water will not and should not happen in FT. Water will blow poo and plankton from FT.

I am also thinking about chicken above FT.
But I think I need large duckweed pond after FT before grow bed to absorb ammonia, duckweed like ammonia.

Hey mantis , you eat veg that eat fish poop.
We eat something that eat something else poop, very sure.

The point is avoid similar species, don't feed human sh_t, because infection/disease.
Chicken should be Ok, pig i'm not sure.

I've seen both chicken and rabbit poop used. Not as the only source though, always just supplementing other diet. The problem with chicken is the chance of salmonella. Not that it could infect fish, but certainly splashing water could leave traces on the veggies. This however is normal in organic farming and I personally do not see a problem as long as all veggies consumed are washed well. Sometimes it is really tempting to eat things out of the growbed while out maintaining it...could be a problem. It was pointed out some time ago that any warm blooded animal has a chance of spreading certain viruses and bacteria to people through there fecal matter. Most people will recomend feeding it to worms and then feeding the worms to the fish. IMO though, If you already have chickens, you are already exposed to whatever they carry. I do plan on having a catfish tank under my rabbits one day.

Its your call really.

Curtin? Could not find/google any info on it. Please share chillidude. The way I have seen it done before is either to allow ducks to swim in FT and/or have bunny cages suspended above FT such that all droppings fall in and fish eat it. Makeing pellets might be quite a bit safer if the fecal matter is basically cooked. I would love to see some more information on making pellets making.

That's Curtin University, DJV.

I asked as I'm currently doing my Masters Degree in Aquaculture there, so I can follow up next week when I'm there.

Will post the outcome of the discussion here. If I forget, feel free to nag me !

What the hell... I'll give it ago tomorrow. At least see if the fish are interested. I will report back.

I have not found a tilapia feed locally so have been feeding a mix of ciclid food (damn expensive! from the aquarium place) shredded ap celery and duckweed which they are not too keen on but it does eventually go somewhere and some trout feed (not much, but it is probably their favorite) and a bit of wheat cereal and a couple of fly maggots now and again.

Tilapia where not too keen on the chicken poo. They did kind of take an interest but did not exactly go crazy for the stuff. They like the cichlid food the most. Typical. Expensive taste!
