Was chatting with a mate of mine today about fishy related stuff and he happened to mention that he couldn't feed his fish today (traditional aquaculture, large earthen ponds, Tilapia) When I asked him why, he said, "because it's cloudy" (as in sky... not cloudy water) He wasn't able to offer a scientific reason, just that every Thai fishery never ever ever ever feeds when it's cloudy. In AP we try to keep as much direct sunlight off the tanks as we can, so this statement seemed odd to me. Was wondering if anyone could shed some light (pun very much intended) on it, scientifically, or whether it's another Thai superstition. Dui |

no idea - It was raining cats and dogs when I fed the fish this morning and they gladly came up to eat as usual. There is a cover on the tank though, but the noise of the rain beeting down on the plastic cover was very loud! |

I do know that some types of fish will go off their feed a bit with barometric pressure changes like when a storm front is coming through. Perhaps this has something to do with it. Also in large ponds where the sky is very visible to the fish, the difference in cloud cover or not can affect the feeding behavior of the fish. With my heavily aerated system and covered tank, cloud cover doesn't seem to affect feeding but sometimes a storm front will. I also tend to feed near dawn and dusk since the catfish seem to eat better then. |
