How do you guys store your fish food? I'm looking at transferring it from the bag it came in to a container to make it a little easier to get at, and was wondering is it necessary to keep it in an air-tight container?

But Dang, they have gone up in price from what I remember buying them at!

I like air tight containers since I live in a humid climate and air tight also usually means bug tight, ants are a major problem here.

A cheaper option would be to get some buckets with lids from a bakery or whatever and break the bag up into smaller portions and seal the feed into the buckets with the lids.

we keep ours in galvanised rubbish bins, cos the possums can't eat holes in them

When I open a bag it gets dumped into an old 20ltr chlorine drum with a screw top.

we use the secondhand 20ltr mayo containers or old honey buckets pick them up from a farm supply place like Elders, Norco etc or even food wholesalers

I use anything that will keep the dog out of the feed.. He loves it when I bring home a bag of feed and forget to put in in a sealed container...

Well I bought a petfood storage container from City Farmers... I think they are Rubbermaids... has a rubber seal at the top lid... has kept the mice and ants out so far... what I did was I also bought the biggest container that had so that I can drop the whole 20kg bag in there, cut the bag open and shut the lid... I store this under the shade and use smaller takeaway containers to hold portion of the feed in the shed and top-up as required...

I also use a 2 door drink fridge to store bulk unopened bags. Was a pain getting the fridge into my house.

When I was using feed quite rapidly (ie when I had a large number of big fish) I just had the bag in a turned off chest freezer. Now I am using very slowly because don't have the large number of fish, so I have split up into big vaccum seal bags and used an elcheapo sealer to remove the air and seal.

I put mine into 3 litre milk container, fill to top ensure not much air in there.

I keep the bulk of the food in an old ice cream container in the freezer and about 2 weeks worth in a jar in the AP. It keeps for months in the freezer...I hope so anyway...it's 2 year old now.

I keep my dog food, fish food, quail food and rabbit food in old Olive barrels.
They're very common over here, ppl are selling them to hold water, but they seal well, are dog proof and almost indestructible, and cost $10 ea.
If I haven't explained well enough, they're a 100L or so tan barrel with a black push on lid that has a screw on sealer on top.
They're food grade, and UV stabilised. And they work REALLY well as drinks tables for when you're having a BBQ as they're rather tall, and with the ridges on the sides, thinks can't get knocked off.
I have heard of ppl keep feed in old chest freezers though... that seems to work well, and for them (living on a farm) it keeps the mice out, with a lid that need not be latched.
