G'Day Gang,
I have put 100 Silver Perch fingerling's in my system and I'm wondering if I need to feed pellets or not.
There is quite a bit of algae in the tank and thought that might be enough for the time being.

Am I right in thinking this :?: :?:

Cheers
Dennis

Probably best to leave them for a little while till they clean up the algae, then start feeding them..

Thanks Gang,

I haven't had any losses and they seem lively so I will wait for the algae to reduce a bit.

Cheers

Don't leave them too long. Algae isn't the best 'total food' for most fish. If you keep them just a little bit hungry, they'll keep your hairy algae down, but the green stuff that covers the walls in a sheet I've not yet found any fish will eat. Not faster than it can grow anyhow ;-)

silver perch fingerlings do need quality protine to do well and silver perch seam to eat more vegi mater as they get biger so if you wanted to you could put a heap of glass shrimp in your fish tank, they would feed on the alge allso and the perch would eat them!

just a thought.

If your system is cycled... and you want to maximise your growth before next winter...

Then you'll need to feed your Silvers a quality pellet feed... algae and/or glass shrimp just wont cut it IMO.... and the amount of glass shrimp required to satisfy the growth rate of 100 Silver Perch would mean a constant supply of glass shrimp... probably daily...

If you want to buy them glass shrimp... or catch them... and feed your Perch for nine months... then hey...

But I think it would be cheaper and more nutritionally beneficial to buy a bag of quality, balanced feed...

Thanks Rupe,
I was thinking more for algae control rather than feed for the SP's

Cheers

Here is a post on the Perth Cichlid forum of a bloke selling glass shrimp cheap, the post is a few months old but It seems he runs a business so he probably still sells them.
