hi guys im going to set up aquaponics i live at callala jervis bay. there is a abundance of seaweed that washes up on the beach im wondering if i could feed that to my fish for a limitless free supply of food.
Would there be any health concerns for the fish.

in my small experience with growing out fish, they need a high protien diet. But the seaweed you find on the beach would make a great tonic, for the vegitation and fish also. Though I doubt you would be able to grow fish out on sea weed alone if at all

Yes I agree I would use the seaweed for food if they ate it but as all things everthing in moderation .... and yes It would be good in your system as you would be getting all those lovely trace elements into your system with out paying money out for seasol etc.... Being also high in iron might stop having to add chelted Iron and high in sodium even after washing saves having to salt your tanks.... like i said in moderation with a balanced diet it should go well...

I'll be interested to know how you go Justin, perhaps you could start with ulva (sea lettuce), and if not you can eat it tourself, delicious stuff

Justin, you need to be able to identify the seaweed (and that ain't easy) before you really know.

The Ulva, as FB suggests, will be a good start - it is used in the aquaculture industry as a feed source for abalone, so the protein level is reasonable. The trick is getting it into a form your fish will eat.

I'm intending to try soon as a feed for my SPs, as it's a reasonably easy seaweed to culture. Good to see someone thinking of taking AP in new and weird directions.
