Hello All,

I am looking to get started in a basement aquaponics system and Im trying to do some research on fish and minimize the cost of feeding them.

My Question is: Is there a fish species that will consume vegetable scraps as a main diet. I am not looking to harvest the fish for food, although Im not opposed to it the garden is my primary objective so not too concerned if they are edible or not.

Welcome to the forum.

Jade perch eat vegetables, particularly leafy greens.

But you might find it hard to get them if you don't live in the warmer parts of Australia.

Black soldier fly larvae eat vegetables scraps and a lot of other kitchen waste. And many fish will eat BSFL.

There are edible species of carp. Carp are omnivores and will eat plants.

Plecko.... but it will turn into a monster.... you dont understand how big they get until your grow one in an aquaponics. My chop and flip starter system was too small for him in my opinion.

Tilapia are also omnivores and will eat duck weed.

Just do a little research on the species you choose.

I use Chicken feed. It has a similar protein content to pelleted fish food, as do cat and dog biscuits.
I have some Skettering fish food pellets and mix then 50:50 with chick crumbles. the fish go for them every time.

Thank You Dave and Maveric for the response. I will dig into these options, but gives me some specifics to research which is what I had a hard time with finding.

I have a 200 gal tank with 12 goldfish. They eat mainly goldfish pellets, but I also give them the leafy greens that they grow for me. They like lettuce, kale, and mustard greens, but didn’t eat the collards or broccoli leaves.
