Hello, im 2 weeks into my first aquaponics system and amidst the excitement and all the new information I didn't realize I've been feeding gmo feed to my tilapia, does this ruin the whole organic idea? Do I have to start over?

I supposed it depends on the extent of the issue..
Naturally, if you stop now, then the impact will be likely minimal
I think that is what I would be doing..
So what component of the feed is GMO..

GMOs are not allowed under any organic standards, but standard AP can't be certified as organic either, at least in Australia, due to the growbed media issue (which is a non-issue AFAIAC)

It's up to you whether or not you want your fish (and later, yourself) to be eating frankenfoods

yea i would get rid of the GMO, but thats just me.

i dont know how anyone can even come close to percieving that aquaponics could be considered anything even slightly similar to organic, considering all the plastic piping and pumps, etc that get used.


as far as im concerned the US organic standard is one of the biggest jokes ever.

Depends whether you think GMO is bad or not?

Thank you for all the input. The soy is gmo, the rest is not however i stopped and bought tetra pond fish food for koi and goldfish at wallmart. Its made in Germany, non gmo however it doesn't sink so im hoping they will get used to coming to the surface or im experimenting getting it wet beforehand and releasing it under the surface they seem to like it.
Also i added 1ppt salt to help cope with low nitrites but my plants took a hit, especially the 3 oreganos losing leaves and getting yellow. Any advice on this?

I'm going to say you probably don't want pond fish food for aquaponics. Search aquaorganics and take a look at it. You need the food to have nutrients so you get nutrients into the water.

for me, GMo food is a serious matter. Just a little GMO feed is still GMO.
