Hi All

We have used 2 different methods for suppliment the commercial feed we give to our tilapia.

Floating nets were made with 4mm garden netting and floated with pool noodles.

These were floated on the fish ponds

Duckweed was placed in the nets and allowed to grow and a handful or 2 are given to the fish at every feeding session to suppliment the commercial feed, this has helped to cut the cost of feed by almost a third.

We also took an insect zapper and placed it over the dam, this was connected with a daylight switch.

It draws in insects at night (cruel I Know, but effective) with fall into the water and feed the fish at almost no cost except for the initial setup and minimal electricity.

Regards

Graham

..
Have you tried anything like Maggot-Farms..
I read where folk have to freeze the excess of grubs.

Given the developing suspicion about how some pelleted foods are made from grossly unsustainable marine meal, then the more you use "Sustainable/Home-Grown food" the less irresponsible those pellets become...

You have a good lookin system there.. :thumbleft:
..
.
PS - Have you got a System Thread about your setup..?

Hi

Thanks for the comments.

One system I have seen is where buckets with small hole on the botton are suspended over the ponds.

Straw is placed on the bottom of the inside of the bucket, on top of which are placed baby chickens that have not made it. The lid also has holes which allows the flies to get in and lay their eggs and maggot production occurs.

The maggots then crawl through the straw and drop into the pond through the holes in the bottom of the bucket.

Works very well except for the smell.

Regarding the system thread, I'm new to this Blogging thing. How do you set it up?

I too am new.. I do like the idea of the hanging buckets.. SIMPLE... PRACTICAL... and not messy in any real way..

To start your own BLOG (as they say), look for the thread "Member's Systems"

http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=18

and just have a read of a few and then start your story of what you have done and the failures and successes..

Others can learn from your practical experience.. :headbang:
