Would you think this might be a good starting box for such a thing?

you are most likely going to have a lot of premature larvae crawl out due to moisture buildup and undesirable substrate conditions. The compost needs to have sufficient drainage so there is almost no puddling. When the conditions are undesirable for the larvae, they do whatever they can to get the hell out of there. And as long as they have moisture, they can climb almost any wall you present them with. Also, the insects are photophobic so unless you kept those bins in a dark area, the larvae are going to hate it even more. I'm not sure what other members on here have used for BSF bins, but a quick search should lead you to some answers. Just remember: no puddling, warm temperatures, and low light conditions are ideal for this animal. |

Maybe I phrased it badly. Is it a good shape to start with, to turn into a bsf composter with various modifications such as drainage? Mostly, would the front ramp be worth having ready made? Reading the black soldier fly blog certainly gives me the impression that a clear box can work? I wasn't just planning on buying that box and hoping, just it looked like maybe it would need less modifying than a rectangular box. My internet is currently playing upmso I can't see those links right now, but will look when possible. |
