Hey guys,
Just wondering if there are any bugs that are no good for trout?
Whenever I find the odd green caterpillar, slug, earthworm, they get thrown in the tank.

Lately, I have seen loads of these caterpillars crawling around the place at work and was wondering if they are OK as well. I assume they will be, but just wanted to make sure before I do.

If they are good, I will start collecting them for the trout :D

Just went out and collected about 50 in 5 mins :)
Hopefully they are good for the trout.

You could use the awesome ask an Entomologist service run by Kathy Ebert. I've used it a few times and Kathy has been really helpful. The clearer your photos the better, and it also helps if you provide details of the environment in which you found the critter,

They are not bugs.

Bugs have sucking mouth parts.

I pick my bugs very carefully... my tilapia don't race to the surface to feed, and purposefully adding a slug anywhere near my grow just gives me the creeps.

I was very, very disappointed in David Attenborough the other day when he referred to all arthropods as bugs.

The term 'bug' is used informally to describe most insects and as far as I'm aware is an accepted use in that regard, but formally it's only used to describe hemipterous insects as you mentioned.

I concur with your thoughts, Stuart. Quite often I can be heard screaming my anger :upset:, disappointment and even disgust, at David Attenborough's script writer for some of the drivel that comes out in otherwise such awe-inspiring documentaries. The old bloke needs to shoulder some of the blame since it is his show and the words are spewing from his own mouth.

So whether they are bugs, grubs, catterpillars, whatever you want to call them, are they safe as food?
Are there any "critters" that are not good for your fish?

In answer to you first question: it depends.

In answer to your second question: yes.

In answer to the original question I think they would be fine but I am not sure.
