I've been reading lots of threads here about fish food, and I see that lots of posters recommend Purina AquaMax.

When I've studied in the past about dog, cat, and poultry foods, I've learned that many health-conscious people suggest to stay away from the big brands like Purina, because a lot of people don't trust their products. My question is: is it different for their aquaculture foods? Is that because we don't have many options to choose from? Or are their aquaculture foods somehow higher quality than their other animal foods?

Thanks.

purina has done lots of studies on providing the best food for fish health and growth..
the aquaculture food is more aimed at providing food to the aquaculture industry..
i've used a couple of "brands" of fish food, but i can easily get the aquamax locally (and it works out $ wise pretty well)

This is one of my biggest concerns too.. do we really know what they are putting into the commercial fish food.. sure, we have the ingredient/analysis breakdowns these companies supply, but can we be sure they are totally GMO free etc?

I think Purina openly supports GMOs, and they don't try to hide it at all. I don't like that.

I haven't found a good source for non-GMO fish food. One of Premium's formulas is organic and non-GMO, but it seems to be only that single product of theirs.

This is what Skretting wrote about the use of GMO products in their fish foods, and it seemed suspiciously ambiguous to me:
------
At all times, Skretting companies only make use of legally approved ingredients and operate in accordance with government and even more strict internal regulations. Whether or not GMOs are present, Skretting feed companies apply strict regulations on the raw materials used and various quality checks are performed before, throughout and after the production process.

Yeah that is dodgy

Going by the rising trend of GMO present in supermarket food, one can only wonder what 'regulations' they put on fish food

Yeah. It ends up to be the same thing with human food - sometimes the best thing to do is find honest companies who we grow to trust. Eden Foods is one of those companies. If they make something, I have faith that they're going to use the safest ingredients possible.

I usually don't trust the larger mainstream companies like Purina, which is why I started this thread in the first place. If some people here have fish food companies that they feel they can trust, I would love to hear from them.

Wouldnt that be a kick in the knackers if a large percentage of us are here bagging out GMO food on nearly a daily basis then to turn around and find our comercial feeds have GMO in them. Especially because a lot of us are using AP to grow our own organic foods. Oh dear.

Ok, Monsanto have got a terrible reputation. But that's the actions of one company, which is different to whether or not genetically modified food is a good idea or not.

I don't really know enough about either side to have a position though...

Have a read of this Curly:

Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food

"In 2009 the American Academy of Environmental Medicine called for a moratorium of GM foods, safety testing and labeling. Their review of the available literature at the time noted that animals show serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system."

Monsanto and their ilk are evil pigs and there gmo's and poisons are killing our environment. There is no profit for them in humans being healthy, seriously, think about it.

I'm so glad the majority of you here are educated about mainstream corruptions. I've seen it on other threads too.

It's frustrating for me to be on forums where you can't mention things like this, because lots of the members are like: "Stop believing that nonsense! We need GMOs to feed the world's poor! Monsanto is philanthropic!"

Monsanto are money hungry scum that don't give a shite about anyones health or well being. Ask the thousands of Indian farmers wives who have lost their husbands to suicide

Here's a good article from just today, talking about the toxicity of Monsanto's RoundUp to aquatic life.
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/artic ... icity.aspx

It's notable that RoundUp can be detected on all "RoundUp-Ready" GMO foods, because they're heavily sprayed with it. That means that if we're feeding our fish GMO foods, we are undoubtedly adding some RoundUp to the system.

-----
The results indicate that aquatic invertebrate ecology can be adversely affected by relevant ambient concentrations of this major herbicide. We conclude that glyphosate and Roundup toxicity to aquatic invertebrates have been underestimated and that current European Commission and US EPA toxicity classification of these chemicals need to be revised.”
