1. If there are no other BSF in my area, can I buy a colony of 3-600 and start a population that will sustain itself? What are my options to get an established colony so that after I order my BSF I dont have to keep ordering more??

2. In winter can you just bring the biopod into your garage with a heat light to keep the colony breeding? What are the temp ranges to keep them going?

Thank you

BSF live in the trees, the males do not come down. The female comes down to lay her eggs and then dies. The male also has a short life span. If it is too cold to survive outside then they will die.

Google for the BSF forum and have a good read, post back your findings a record for future searches. Cheers

Im thinking of giving a small amount a try in the garage with a poultry heat lamp. I figure I will learn a few things on my first attempt and then get things really going when it worms up hopefully.

here is one good post from another:
One thing first, if you're trying to get a new colony established you might not want to feed any grubs to your chicks. If you don't have a substantial wild BSF population you need those grubs to pupate, mate, and return to your BioPod to lay eggs.

I've had liquid issues with watermelon too, it must be about 95% water. I think the drain system works a bit slowly on the Biopod and watery stuff like melons can exceed the limit. I always thought it might be a good idea to store some dry types of wasted food like stale cereals, flour, etc for times when the liquid load is heavy. I guess you could also add very wet items more slowly if you can store them for a few days.

If you have a big robust colony going you could probably also leave the lid off of the BioPod without attracting pest flies. If you could do that I wonder if evaporation would increase enough to make a difference...

Most of my waste is on the drier side so I don't have much experience dealing with it.

You throw a handful of larvae on some loose ground every now and then, and hope that some lay dormant and pupate for next season.
