Post subject:  How much should I feed silver perch

Hi all,

I put 15 SP in my FT over the weekend. They are 10 - 15 cms long each and I am looking for some advise regarding how much to feed them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)

JP.

In a brand new system we recommend no more than 1 tablespoon per day for a 2 square metre BYAP growled, for an ibc growbed, half a tablespoon per day and we only use floating feed. Stop feeding if the water goes green.

How long does the 3mm floating feed float for Faye? I feed my SP at night when they seem more active, and by morning there is nothing floating on the surface, can i assume it has been eaten, or is it possible the food is sinking overnight?

Gazza, I believe silvers will eat from the tank bottom as well after the floating pellets sink. But I don't it is a good idea to feed at night like the way you are doing. Could be a disaster waiting to happen if the silvers decide not to eat the sunken food.

So would i be better feeding during the day, and removing any pellets that are still there after say half an hour before they sink? Its just a bit hard to tell as they are still quite shy.

My silvers will not surface feed unless I close the lid. Then i hear the splashing of them hitting the surface. I always go out after an hour or so and net out any that is still floating.

It was suggested to me at the Woodvale Fish and Lilly farm to purchase sinking pellets but looking on here it appears that everyone else is using floating pellets. I did notice the SP eating the pellets from the bottom and I do have 4 yabbies in there so am I ok with the sinking ones?

There are not always right or wrong answers, however we aim to avoid uneaten food collecting on the bottom and contributing to poor water quality. At least if you use floating pellets and the fish don't eat them you will be wise to the fact that they are still there and have the chance to remove them. We do hear of stories where people to continue to throw in feed even when they cannot see the bottom, where do you reckon that ends up, and what do you think the water quality is like?
Not sure what the pellets are exactly that you have, but we know that what we use is high in protein and provides a range of trace ellements suitable for the fish that we are going to eat as well as providing nutrients that the plants require. We rarely if ever, add anything else to the system. Hope this helps.

I had green string algae on my tank floor so couldnt see if any of the sinking 6mm I feed the big ones was left. I broomed the algae off in small sections over a couple of weeks so now I can see any food left over. Mine have always had sinking pellets till I got a bag of floating a couple of months ago (thanks Jamey).
I only throw a small amount of floating in so they can have some fun. There main diet is sinking

Ok so now my water has gone green and murky. I think I need to take my pellets back and exchange them for the floating variety. How long should I stop feeding for and do I need to do anything to clear up the water?
