Can you copy their fly traps for your own collection? Or did you promise not to affect the population of flies while they are testing?

yeah, we mostly promised not to bother it :( Anything that gets caught elsewhere is fair game though
One advantage of the trap is that we are not getting bitten by flies in the yard now, that's really nice :) We'll have to see if we can keep the trap when the study is done  fish food!

Jaymie, our neighbor has horses within 25 feet of our outside pond.
We have a hard time enjoying our pond while the flies are biting.
Such is life in the country. Maybe we could use fly traps. I will have to learn how they are made. Do they come to bug zappers? I could hang one over our pond with no bottom tray.

Sounds like it would help supplement the feedings. One concern that may come up is if you always feed your fish live food would they then reject pellets over time?
Have to find that happy middle ground.
Dont know if you've seen this yet but it has the content of BS larva as far as a food source goes.NCSU

Yes John, I have read that article. Very interesting and encouraging.

My fish in the outside pond eat a lot of natural live food. If they stop eating pellets, that is OK because they are not for food, just to watch while relaxing. Slim fish are fine for watching. They are grown up feeder fish I buy for $0.09 to $0.19 each. They grow nicely in the pond. I do not want to spend more to feed our local blue herons.

The trap is quite large and is supported by three star pickets. There is a small container of bait at the top of one of the pickets (octenol). There is also something (not sure what) smeared around the bottom of each of the pickets to attract and trap house flies. I should ask them what that bait is, might be good for home.
The flies go into the centre of the trap at the front, fly up past the mesh, into a chamber, up further and into the empty drink bottle, then through to the mesh bag.

Thanks for the detail photos of the fly trap Jaymie.

Looks like the Townsville bus line is pretty handy for you. Or is that a school bus stop?

The paste looks like ant tac (probably with some bait stirred in).

I was told yesterday (after a grand total of 4 1/2 weeks of school  ) that he didn't want me to walk him to his classroom any more. So I walked him across the carpark (don't want to get sued for damage to any cars if they run over him), got back in the car and drove around to where I could see the classroom and watched from there (to make sure the 10 year olds didn't get too scared by him)

Little mans getting quite independant can't even walk with him to class any more? Did you ask him what you should be spending your mornings doing if it aint to be that? They grow up way to fast.

I think he'd prefer me to be at home with his 3 yo sister, rather than cramping his style at school  Oh well, gives me more time to work on the system :)
