Put the harvester on a pole in the ground and wrap the pole with a strip of old sacking drenched in used motor car oil. keeps ants off beehives so should work for a bsf harvester.

In the BYAP magazine (No. 5), the BSF article recommends not using grass or garden refuse. As these are usually the main ingredient in 'most' compost systems, which BSF lay their eggs, am I missing something?

What's the theory behind no grass/garden refuse?

I certainly put vege garden cuttings in there, except tomato leaves which I know have some toxins in them. Maybe that's the logic - some garden cuttings have natural insecticides in them such as daisies/marigolds.

The other things to consider is that this is not a compost system - there's no product at the end that you're going to spread on your garden. My biopod has been running for a year and a half and I've never yet emptied it - the idea is that the larvae consume what's put in. The only output, besides the larvae, is the stinking liquid that accumulates in the jar in the bottom and has to be emptied every few weeks/months - and you don't want to be putting that on your garden.

What it is, is a protein bioaccumulation system and the idea is that that protein then goes back into the system to feed your fish, chickens, whatever...

Damn that sounds scientific, I like it! :thumbright:

Ok, no tomato leaves but can use some garden waste.

I started making a small system but one second thoughts will make a large a system as possible.

Cheers!
