Did anyone have any further ideas about getting rid of the fat content while retaining the protein content?

Could the protein and other minerals and good bits be salvaged while rendering for example?
High protein, low fat food with a bio-diesel by-product :)

Dui.

create a fish playground/ exercise ground... in youtube if you type in fish tricks, you'll find lots of videos of people setting their fish up so they "do" things to get food. quite hilarious I tell ya

Not that I'm aware of Dui. I still want to have a play with it sometime, but just have not been able to get the time - my priority is getting my AP system up and running first, then the other interesting stuff. Maybe in about a month.

Hard to fins a definitive answer with a quick search.. Might be worth doing some in depth googling though, there are a lot of people out there doing research..

Yeah I didn't find anything that told you how to do it, just that some scientists had done it. But really, it should primarily be a matter of crushing, cooking, cooling and skimming to get rid of much of the fat. That's going to be my approach and then get a couple of nutritional profiles run on the resulting gunk.

I read that the guys in Songhai steamed (housefly) maggots and then sundried them.
No idea what effect that has on the fat/protein content.
Even if the fat content was lost to the drying process, this may leave a decent protien content.
I have read a lot of papers about replacing fishmeal with "magmeal" looks encouraging.
In SE Asia it was reported that 30% of reared fish are used for creating fishmeal to feed back to the fish....
It seems that the best ratio was 25% magmeal, 75% fish meal in terms of growth, but 100% magmeal gave by far the highest profit ratio for feed cost vs income from the fish.

Weight gain was less, but monetary input was far lower.

Once I manage to get a bin running, will be experimenting for sure.

Just tacking a tidbit of info to the thread.

I was looking for information on the American PawPaw tree (not papaya) and noticed that it is pollenated by flies. I thought, what the heck and did a search on Black Soldier Flies and PawPaw and found a mention that BSFL like Pawpaw fruit. Might help someone in the Eastern USA (where it's native) pull some in if they like the fruit enough. Might work for other types of flies as well (instead of carrion) and Paw Paws grow pretty far north.
