Hi Doug,

Steve's beaten me to it but to clarify......dried duckweed and dried BSF larvae are both around the 40% protein mark. Dried duckweed is slightly higher in protein than Soybeans.

Thanks Steve and Gary. If my fish will not eat duck weed, the chickens will. I guess I need to grow duck weed. In my case it will be easier to grow it in my outside ponds. I have a three tire pond with gold fish only in the bottom pond. the top two ponds do not have fish. Duck weed could trive undesturbed. The top[ pond is 125 gallons, the middle pond is about 165 gallons. that is what I have to grow duck weed. The bottom pond is about 2000 gallons. The goldfish there would eat duckweed from that pond. You have me thinking about another step to independence. Thanks.

I worked out why it must be called duck weed..................the half blue barrel i have buried for the chooks and duck was very green and a bit stinky, so i thought why not cover it with duckweed, grow a bit and extract some nutes from it.................yeh right, the duck demolished the lot in under an hour

I thought it would be cool to have the BSF larvae fall into some kind of solar dehydrator.

Hello Doug,
In this document they mention freezing and then drying at 70 degrees for storage:
http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/waste_mgt/smit ... les/A2.pdf

Thus far my thoughts are on making this more viable as a greater part of fish food.
The high fat content limits how much you can feed to fish, but what if one pressed the oil out. (Maybe to burn in an oil fired water heater....)
I realize oil presses are not cheap and not Backyard Aquaponics either, but its of interest to me.

Hayden

Turn the oven to the lowest setting and leave the door open a bit works well with tomatoes
