I drink protein shakes or banana and egg smoothies to get a bit of protein. I would have to be VERY keen to drink spirulina.

I only have to open the jar and the smell makes me gag....

There must be spirulina farms in Oz to produce what the shops sell.
And maybe that dry stuff can give a new culture if diluted in water, i wouldn't see how an algae that copes with flooding and drought can't go back to life once it's dry.
I haven't any here but if someone who has could give go, to recognise spirulina in water you would need a microcope, it has the shape of a green spring.
Tim C: I can't beleive that people who eat VEGEMITE can't eat spirulina!!! Specially if they can eat crude eggs for protein...

Wow it all seems so much more complicated than just feeding a few worms from your worm farm that you grew using refuse from your hydroponics that you grew from your fish farm :)
I've fed sprouted wheat to the pigs, worked well but a lot of work. I may have access to fish heads etc not sure about diseases. Lots of talk about cheap meat, maybe from the abbitoir but what about road kill?
For me I'll only have 10 or so fish so I'll just buy pellets but I did have grandiose visions of a worm farm and bug zapper supplying all the necessary protein requirements.

If you go for pellets, try TT's organic fish food. We have been going far to try to do ourselves the pellet composition that is the optimal for fish growth (fish farm wise).
For the fish scraps, be carefull with parasites, or you cook them for 1 hour over 70 °C or you freeze them for 48 h at -15°C. This kills 90% of the life in the scaps. The best is to mulch it as a fish powder then cook or freeze.
Fish liver or other organs are pretty safe but not the guts. The skin and bones are very good also. Just have to source the place the fish came from.

I'd heard that before. Once thought that I had it in my duckweed tank - but the algae that I had which was shaped like springs was bigger. The springs were quite obvious to the naked eye.

It could have been another variety, there's lots of it. Or it was filamentous algae like the ones who find in aquariums that are not in AP (full of nitrate)
Anyway i'll try to get pics on the topic i'll do this WE.

Nah - wasn't filamentous. This stuff was nearly like jelly when you squashed it between your fingers.

Could have been spirulina, it gets pretty dense and is full of oils when it is cultured. I'l check my books tonight.

Guess it doesn't really matter now - don't have it anymore and have no idea how it got there. Might have been with the duckweed I suppose :-/
