When I first put my tilapia fingerlings into the big cage in the big tank, it was coated in gunk that I suspect was at least partly composed of catfish poop. Within about 6 hours, the tilapia had cleaned the cage of all gunk.

Perhaps the natural cow feed might be ok as a supplement to the diet of the older tilapia but very young tilapia can be on a feed as high as 50% protein and juvies probably want to be above 40% of good growth.

I can tell you that the tilapia love when we feed them worms and they were happy to eat BSF larva too. Then again, they love to tear apart lettuce.

Good luck finding an alternative food source you like for the fishies.

I am going to feed them algae and cow poop  and see what happens.

I have a tank loaded with algae, I am going to put a couple small tilapia in it to compare their growth with commercial fish flake.
