Wow - I had no idea.
I kinda assumed they would be laying the eggs on the spiled meat for some reason.
So some brown cardboard under the entry hole with plenty of space for them to lay eggs.
Thanks again!

Any (except vegitarian) restaurant will have almost as much meat going out the back door and into the bin, as they have going out the front.

We waste a lot of food.

It's funny, many people in the world think maggots are food, and we dont even think the stuff that maggots eat is food.

Oh well, not to worry.

I just like to remind myself that I'm a bit lucky from time to time :)

Sorry, hippy moment :flower:

Lucky because you are one of the "enlightened" that has stumbled across Aquaponics BW?
If that's what you mean, I feel very lucky too!

No, lucky because I was born in a country where you dont have to be hungry, and we have so much of everything you trip over things like this laptop left out in hard rubbish when you go for a walk in our safe, well maintained streets where hardly anyone is trying to cut any bits off to re=educate me, but when I need something cut off, teams of people spring into action and fix my broken bits like some amazing pitcrew for humans, and in return they ask is for me to sign a slip of paper and a small share of my income.

pretty sweet deal :)

Australia, where the streets are paved with laptops, and restaurants throw out all the maggot food you could ever need, and where the government only cut off the bits you want them to.

BSFL will eat any organic matter; their food doesn't have to be meat. An outdoor worm bin will likely have larvae if BSFs are in the area.

Scratch Australia and write 'the western civilization'

(sorry for the mini hijack)

About the biopod: almost done (too dark for pics), decided to go with a garden hose set in a spiral inside the bucket to achieve the ramp.
I had to make do with what was in the house and converted a small office paper bin into the pod.

This thread is great. So much useful info.
We always used to catch mosquito larvae and feed them to the guppies when I was little, but this is taking things up a notch.

:laughing3: Great!
I was noticing how many big screen (CRT) TVs there were getting chucked out when we were last in Australia. Coo-ray-zee! To think that those are gonna end up buried in a landfill somewhere. A lot of them looked like they were only a couple of years old.

they will eat vegies if there is nothing else around, but house flys much prefer meat.

found out tonight that where Dad works there tends to be a fair bit of road kill, mainly rabbits, so I will be getting the odd bunny every now and then!!

I'll get some photos soon, just trying to work out what will produce the best numbers. I have prawn heads, chicken, beef, fruit and veggies. will soon add fish frames, rabbits and less veggies.

The number one thing i want to see is the maggots climbing up the ramp into the sawdust bucket
