I think the idea is that it cleans the insides as well, so it would probably have to be something they can eat.. Out of date flour, or flour that has weavels in it so it's free? Perhaps some bran or husk type by-product from grain processing?

Went to the neighbors across the way for a New Years drink. He is an old time country boy.
I mentioned that I needed to find a source of fish food that didn't come out of a bag from a factory. He points at his freezer and said he had what I needed. He pulls out a gallon size Ziploc bag of frozen grasshoppers.
"This is what I use to go fishing with. After someone mows in preperation for making hay, all the grasshoppers will fly into the bushes on the edges of the fields. That night, you go out with flashlight and just pick them like berries. They don't move around at night and someone just stole their meal/hideway area, so they are there for the picking."

That seems like a pretty good idea. I'll have to try this next season. I had been thinking of raising crickets. Grasshoppers sound just as good.

Well after the last harvest that ended up being 'just a bit toooo much to handle', the Biopod has just been cleaned out ready to go again.

In there this time is some fish frames, abalone, and squid heads from a recent spear fishing trip.

I'll wait until these are completely absorbed by HFM before discarding and the restocking with some more road kill.. Just not 12kg worth..! :funny1:

Could you grind up the remnant bones for fertilizer or anything? Sure seems a waste to throw 'em away. ;-)

That's what bone meal is right? Dried first, ground up and mixed into fertilizer or applied to dirt gardens for added calcium.

After reading this thread I have reorganized my road kill processor.

Realized that having the tub over the tank would lead to possible over feeding.

I now have a 2 bucket system with road kill in one bucket and maggots landing in a smaller one using pvc pipe..

Here lies the twist... The flies gain access via a gauze cone to the bucket and then can't escape. They then lay eggs and then follow another pipe to a netting cone that hangs over the water to a floating hoop so the trout can pick them off.

Maggots make their way up a pvc shoot and land up in the small bucket with flour in which can the be frozen for controlled feeding.

What was the conversation rate in the end?

1/4?

I will see if I can set up a prototype soon, but I am traveling at the moment...

Just put together one of the PVC designs I saw in here, while waiting for some concrete to dry.. Thanks to King Eric I think it was, for the idea..

Have changed it a little, and will try it for BSF during summer.. Still need to add a tap to the screwcap..
