I had always considered spirogyra a "problem" in my fish pond until recenty when I dumped some duck weed tangled up in spirogyra into my aquarium. It didn't take long for everything to disappear! Has anyone tried to feed spirogyra to their silver perch?

i thinnk you will have to give us some more information of this plant? and some of its characteristics.

Does it tend to grow amongst the duckweed? I found that when I grew duckweed in a tank with a clear lid on it (with some ventilation), an algae formed between the duckweed that somewhat bonded it together in lumps.
I tried the lid so the tank would act as a solar collector for my water, unfortunately the duckweed doesn't seem to fond of that environment.

In my setup it certainly does - in fact, I am finding it hard to grow duck week without this filamentous alga, as it seems to grow faster than the duck weed. The original samples of duck weed I got was "contaminated" with spirogyra, binding them all together.

I found that algae was an issue when I grew duckweed until the duckweed reached a certain density at which point the duckweed mulched the algae.

My goldfish have always loved algae, and I think my tilapia will, too. There's currently no algae for them to eat, but they all try to pick the biofilm off the walls of the tank.

One of the plants we did studies on in year 12 was spirogyra - it grows real well and is hardy - once in a system it should be rather difficult to get it out for good as it forms zygots and can sit dorment for absolue ages, even in dry conditions... It seemed to grow well both in moving water and in still water from what I remember (Its been 10 years since I last worked with spirogyra )
