Thats some useful maggot info Charlie.
There used to be a maggot farm just outside of town (long since gone now), the stench in summer was pretty awful as you drove past. They used large sheds divided into bays with dead bullocks (cattle) for the flies.

I can just imagine you counting out the 100 maggots  we used to buy them by the pint.

I did count out a hundred once just to see how big a container I would need, then the rest were just scooped out of the bucket giving a little extra

Benefit of living out of town is there's nobody to notice the smells but alas I live in town now. I didn't really mind the fishy smells but dead cattle :pukeright: Maybe I can get away with one little bucket...or do it at work! Benefit of being a waste water operator

Can I ask a dumb question? I have fished before with innards of chickens, (liver, etc.) - instead of using the innards to attract flies, why not just grind up the innards and feed them to the fish directly? What am I missing here?

Just a method of producing maggots or flies, whichever your particular fishies prefer. Or free bait to sell and help fund aquaponic endeavors!

The other thing about maggots is the shelf life.. the fish will still eat them after they turn into castors.
My fish tend to eat everything my gecko`s leave, recently dead crickets and non moving waxworms. The gecko`s won`t eat mealworms but they might be another live food suppliment for the fish..a bit of variety is usually a good thing
