Interesting looking fish.... :thumbright:

Fairly similar to the murray cod in many ways.

Thanks earthbound for the pic. Very nice looking fish. Are u aloud to keep these fish and were do they come from. Wife even likes the look of them.

What interested me was how easy they would be to breed. eg more like trout than cod.

Fingerlings crossed – the cod’s back to stay06 Jun, 2011

Fifteen years ago, the first of 300,000 Trout Cod fingerlings were released into the Ovens River to try to save the species from extinction. It looks like all the work is paying off.

The re-stocking was part of a national recovery plan for the species and was backed by habitat works to improve water quality and streamside vegetation.

Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI) Senior Scientist (Fish Ecology) said the long-term aim of the recovery program is to establish a self-sustaining population of the cod in the Ovens River.

“Recent surveys in the Ovens River show that the critically endangered cod could be doing just that,” .

“The surveys from Bundalong to Myrtleford indicate that after the 10-year restocking program the cod has expanded its range as well as its breeding rates.”

Senior Biodiversity Officer said it was important to research the extent of the cod’s comeback.

He said ARI researchers used electro-fishing to record the size, weight and condition of the fish across the survey area.

It had never occured to me to look into Trout Cod, how are their breeding habits? Would they breed in tanks, or like most other native fish require running/flowing water?

Why do you think you can't have flowing water in tanks ?

I'm guessing that if they are endangered they don't breed too easily..

I understand they're on a par with Murray Cod, so not too hard - main problems with endangered is habitat destruction and their environment continually being stocked with trout (by Govts that legislate one thing and do the other).

I just mean like SP you cant breed in an IBC, infact part of there demise in the Murray river system has been daming and weirs that stop the flow of water which has an affect on there eggs that require constant flow/movement to hatch.

Unlike Silvers and Golden Perch, Murray Cod (and most likely Trout Cod) dont require a rise in water levels to spawn. They will spawn in tanks if a artificial hollow log or drum is put in the tank.
